How do I shop for a new mattress?
First,
bring your partner and your pillow! It's important that you both like the way a mattress feels. We always say that comfort is in the back of the beholder. So that means both of you need to try it out. Also, your pillow that you are comfortable sleeping with is an integral part of picking out your new mattress. You want to make sure your pillow fits your preferred sleep surface
Next, don't just sit on the edge of the bed or lie down for a couple of seconds. Take your time – try out the bed in different sleeping positions, on your back, your side and your stomach. We're not embarrassed if you lie down for 10 or 15 minutes. In fact, we like it because you'll be better able to judge if the bed meets your specific comfort expectations.
How do I know how the mattress I'm looking at stacks up to other mattresses?
First,
individual comfort is the most important guide in buying a new mattress. Just because a mattress is more expensive doesn't mean it's the better bed for you. In general terms, more coils mean more support and that means more comfort. However, since each manufacturer constructs its mattresses differently, coil count may not tell you everything because the gauge of the steel in the coil may differ. Coil counts do count, though – especially when you're comparing beds from the same company when the gauge will be the same.
Another indication of quality is the length of the warranty. The more expensive mattresses will generally keep their comfort life longer and will have minimum guarantees of 10 years. That tells you that the company is pretty sure of its quality!
